If a nutrition label won’t save in Shopify, or a label check flags it, look at the “of which” lines first. The usual cause is an “of which” value that is larger than the total it belongs to, such as sugars higher than carbohydrate or saturates higher than fat. A table with those numbers can’t be right, so fix the number before the label goes on a product page.

This guide explains why the rule exists, shows how to find the wrong value, lists the usual causes and covers what to check if the label still won’t save.

Written by the StoreFleet team. The first draft was AI-assisted and a person reviewed it. This is general information, not legal advice, and following it does not guarantee compliance. Points marked (verify) are ones we have not checked line by line. Check them against the current consolidated text of Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011 on EUR-Lex, or with a qualified adviser, before you rely on them.

Why an “of which” value can’t be larger than its total

Under Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011, the mandatory nutrition declaration lists energy, fat, saturates, carbohydrate, sugars, protein and salt. Saturates are shown as “of which saturates” under fat, and sugars as “of which sugars” under carbohydrate. Our guide to the EU nutrition declaration format covers the full order and units.

An “of which” line is part of the line above it. Saturates are part of the fat, and sugars are part of the carbohydrate. So a subset can never be bigger than its total:

  • Saturates can’t exceed fat.
  • Sugars can’t exceed carbohydrate.

A sugars value of 12 g under a carbohydrate value of 9 g contradicts itself. A label tool or a validation step that compares the two lines will treat it as an error. How each tool shows that error, and whether it stops you saving or only warns you, depends on the tool, so check how the one you use behaves (verify). Either way, the fix is the same: correct the number.

Step 1: Find the line that’s wrong

  1. Open the nutrition values for the product wherever you keep them: your label app, the product’s metafields or the supplier sheet you copied them from.
  2. If a message appears when you save, read it. It usually names the field it doesn’t accept. Start there.
  3. Compare each pair side by side: fat and saturates, then carbohydrate and sugars.
  4. Find the pair where the “of which” number is higher than the total.

Step 2: Check the usual causes

Most of these errors come from a short list of mistakes:

  • Swapped rows. The total went into the “of which” field and the subset went into the total. Check this first.
  • Mixed units. One value is in grams and the other in milligrams. Enter both in the unit the field expects.
  • Different bases. One number is per 100 g and the other is per portion, both copied from a supplier sheet. The EU table is per 100 g or per 100 ml, so every row needs the same basis. For the reasons, see our comparison of the EU nutrition label and the US Nutrition Facts panel.
  • A typo. An extra digit or a misplaced decimal separator, such as 12.5 typed as 125 or 1.25.
  • Rounding. The total was rounded down below the subset. Rounding rules for nutrition values are set out in the European Commission’s guidance on tolerances (verify). If a supplier’s rounded figures don’t add up, ask them for the unrounded values. To see how unrounded values round, enter them in the EU nutrition label generator.

Compare against your lab report or the supplier specification, not against another brand’s label.

Step 3: Correct the value and save

  1. Change the wrong value so every “of which” line is equal to or lower than its total.
  2. Save the label again.
  3. Open the product page on your storefront and check that the table shows the numbers you expect, in the right rows.

If it still won’t save

  • The message names another field. Fix that field. A label tool can check things other than the “of which” lines, so correct the value the message points to.
  • The field wants a plain number. Type 12.5, not 12.5 g or 12,5 g, unless the field asks for the unit or accepts a decimal comma. Check what your tool accepts (verify).
  • The values save but don’t show on the page. That is a different problem, usually in the theme. See Shopify nutrition and allergen metafields not showing.
  • You need help with Etiketto. Write to hello@reply.getstorefleet.com with the product name and the message you see. For where Help and saving live in the app, see where to find Help in Etiketto.

Run the “of which” check before you enter values

The quickest way to avoid a label that won’t save is to check the numbers before you type them. For every product, compare saturates with fat and sugars with carbohydrate in the source sheet. This catches the swapped rows and typos that creep in when values are copied from a spreadsheet or a supplier sheet. It also stops a contradictory table from reaching a product page.

About Etiketto: EU Nutrition Labels

Etiketto: EU Nutrition Labels is a Shopify app for food shops selling into the EU. It shows the food information Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011 requires on your product pages: a nutrition table, ingredients with allergens in bold, and the operator. You enter the values from your own specification or lab results, mark allergens by wrapping them in asterisks, and add the Food information block to the product template in the theme editor, with no theme code.

The app does not calculate your nutrition values, and it does not make a page compliant by itself. The numbers you enter decide what the shopper sees, so check them against your lab or supplier data.

Fix one label, then check the rest

Fix the “of which” values on the label that won’t save, check the live page, then run the same check on the rest of your products. To show the nutrition table, bold allergens and operator details on your product pages, install Etiketto: EU Nutrition Labels from the Shopify App Store.
