Pick a cart and a buyer, and see which payment methods checkout shows after six sample rules: the four Cash on Delivery presets and two rules for B2B buyers.
Rules run in their priority order, the same way the app's simulator tries your saved rules. The payment methods are the ones you switched on in Shopify, by the names buyers see.

Payment settings switch a method on or off for everyone. Cash on Delivery shows up on a large cart, on a pickup order and for a buyer who still has an open COD order.
The buyer picks what is shown, and you deal with it after the order.
Cart total and quantity; product tags, collections, types, vendors and SKUs; delivery country, region, postcode and delivery method; customer tags, login, B2B, order count and total spent.
Order history counts each customer's open and cancelled Cash on Delivery orders of the last 60 days, so Cash on Delivery can stay hidden until an open one is fulfilled or cancelled. Guests count as 0 orders.
A rule hides methods, gives them a new name in the buyer's language (English, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Dutch or Polish) or moves them up or down. Start from Cash on Delivery presets for B2B, pickup, large carts and EU markets, and check every rule in the simulator.
A rule has one or more conditions, applies when all of them or any of them match, and does one action. Rules run in priority order, up to 200 rules.

{title} for the current nameRules hide, rename or move the methods your payment providers offer; they never add a method or change an amount. A rule made from a preset starts switched off, so you can try it in the simulator first.
Pick a Cash on Delivery preset or write a rule with your own conditions.
Try a cart, an address and a customer, and see which methods are shown.
The rule runs at checkout as a Shopify Function.
Knowing the limits up front saves you an install.
It works with the methods you already switched on in Shopify.
Rules hide, rename or reorder methods; they never add a surcharge.
Open and cancelled COD orders are counted from the last 60 days.
Rules run at checkout, not in theme code.

Write payment customizations, to run your rules at checkout; read products, to pick products and collections in rules; read orders, to count each customer's open and cancelled Cash on Delivery orders; write customers, to save those two counts on the customer for checkout; and read locales, for the language of service emails.
No. Rules run at checkout as a Shopify Function; nothing is added to your theme.
No. Its rules run as a Shopify Function, which Shopify lets stores on any plan use from public apps on the Shopify App Store.
The function is removed with the app, so no rule runs at checkout any more. The app's records are deleted when Shopify sends its erasure request 48 hours after you uninstall.
No. For order history it reads only order IDs, payment method names, dates and fulfillment status. It keeps the customer ID and two counts, never a name, email, address or phone number.
