Print EU Food Labels From Shopify POS at the Counter or Market Stall

Print a product's food label from Shopify POS on an 80 mm receipt printer or any printer: setup, staff access, languages, variants and what the printed label leaves out.

Online, your food labels live on the product page. In the shop, at a market stall or in the stockroom, they need to be on paper: a jar whose label got damaged, a tray of baked goods packed this morning, a customer at the counter who asks what exactly is in the cake.

If your labels are already in Etiketto, you do not need a second label tool for that. With the Pro plan, Etiketto adds Print food label to products in Shopify POS, and prints the same information your online store shows. This guide covers the setup, the printing itself and the limits worth knowing before you rely on it.

What gets printed

The printed label is built from the product’s published label in Etiketto: EU Nutrition Labels, so it says what your product page says:

  • the name of the food,
  • the ingredients, with allergens in bold,
  • “Contains” and “May contain”,
  • the nutrition table, or for a food supplement the amounts per daily dose,
  • net quantity,
  • storage conditions and instructions for use,
  • origin, alcohol content when it applies,
  • the food business operator.

It prints as one black-and-white label that fits an 80 mm receipt roll, the paper most POS receipt printers already use.

Before the first print

Three things need to be in place.

1. The label is published. Only the published label is ever printed, never a draft. If a product shows “No food label to print”, open it in Etiketto in Shopify admin, add or finish the label and publish it.

2. Staff can use the app in POS. POS staff need access to the Etiketto app. The store owner gives it in Shopify admin under Settings > Users. Without it, staff see “Your POS staff account has no access to this app.”

3. A printer is reachable. You have two options:

  • A receipt printer connected to the POS device. It appears by name in the print window. If it does not, check it under POS Settings > Hardware.
  • Any printer through the device’s print dialog. Useful for an office printer in the back room, or when the receipt printer is busy at the till.

Printing a label, step by step

  1. In Shopify POS, open the product. For a product with variants, pick the variant first.
  2. Open the product’s action menu and tap Print food label.
  3. Check the window: it shows the product’s name, and the variant’s name for a product with variants.
  4. Tap Print on followed by your printer’s name to use the connected receipt printer, or tap Print to choose a printer in the print dialog.

One label comes out. Repeat for each pack you need.

Which language the label is printed in

The label follows the language of the POS device, as long as your store’s labels have that language. Etiketto looks in three places:

  • its built-in translations of the fixed label texts,
  • your own texts under Settings > Translations,
  • the label’s own translations of ingredients and other free text.

When the device’s language is not available, the label prints in English. If your shop staff use the POS in German and your labels are translated into German, the printout is in German. If a tablet is set to English for a new team member, the printout follows.

For a shop near a language border, or a stall at a market abroad, this is worth checking on each device before the day starts: print one label and read it.

Products with variants

If a product is labelled in “Variants differ” mode in Etiketto, each variant prints its own label, or the product’s label with that variant’s net quantity, exactly like your online store does. That is why picking the variant in step 1 matters: a 250 g and a 500 g bag of the same coffee print different net quantities.

What the printed label does not include

The printout is the food information from your label, not a full pack label. It has no best-before date and no lot number, because those change with every batch and Etiketto does not track batches. Add them on the pack as you do today, with a date stamp, a sticker or a handwritten field.

Also keep in mind:

  • The printout is only as correct as the published label. If a recipe changes, update and publish the label before you print new ones.
  • One black-and-white label on receipt paper suits shelves, counters and short-life products. For long-life retail packs, your usual pack printing may still be the better choice.

Where this helps most

A few situations where printing from POS saves time:

  • Bakeries and delis packing products the same morning: print as you pack, at the till you already use.
  • Market stalls and pop-ups: the POS device and a small receipt printer are already on the table, so labels do not need a laptop.
  • Replacing a damaged label on a shelf item without going back to the office.
  • Answering a customer at the counter: print the label and hand it over when someone asks about allergens or nutrition.

Troubleshooting

  • “No food label to print”: the product or selected variant has no published label. Publish it in Etiketto, then try again.
  • Your printer is not listed after “Print on”: only receipt printers connected to this POS device are listed. Check POS Settings > Hardware, or tap Print to use the print dialog.
  • “Your POS staff account has no access to this app.”: the store owner needs to give that staff account access to Etiketto in Shopify admin.
  • The window says printing is part of Pro: printing labels in POS is a Pro feature. The store owner can start it from Plans in Etiketto in Shopify admin.

One label source, online and in the shop

The point of printing from POS is not the printer. It is that the label on the shelf and the label on the product page come from the same published record, so a correction made once reaches both. The Etiketto app page lists the other places the same label appears.
