Aetas: Age Verification In review

Age verification at Shopify checkout, without Plus

Shopify app that runs an age check in the cart and at checkout, for shops selling vapes, alcohol, tobacco or knives.

Buyers confirm their date of birth in the cart, checkout stops carts without a valid check, and unchecked orders are held before shipping.

An age gate pop-up does not stop an order

Selling vapes, tobacco, alcohol or knives online means checking that the buyer is old enough before the parcel leaves. A pop-up asking “Are you over 18?” on the home page is one click, and it does not stop anyone from checking out.

Shopify has no date-of-birth step at checkout, and an order that slips through still has to be caught by someone before it ships.

The minimum age differs by product and country: 18 for vapes in the UK (GOV.UK) and Germany (§ 10 JuSchG), 21 for tobacco and e-cigarettes in the US (FDA, Tobacco 21).

What you get

A date-of-birth step in the cart

When the cart holds a product you marked as age-restricted, by collection, tag or product type, a Confirm your age step shows next to the checkout button, in the cart page and the cart drawer. An app embed adds it to your theme, and it speaks English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Dutch and Polish.

Checkout stops carts without a valid check

The app works out the age from the date of birth and writes a signed check to the cart; the date of birth itself is not stored. A Shopify checkout rule blocks checkout when the check is missing, expired, not genuine or too young for the delivery country. It works on every Shopify plan.

Every order checked again before it ships

Each new order with a restricted product is checked again. An order without a valid check is put on a fulfillment hold and tagged age-check-failed. A verified order is tagged age-verified and can get a handover note naming the carrier’s age service: DHL Persönliche Übergabe in Germany, a Royal Mail age-verified service in the UK, adult signature in the US.

Order #1048 · United Kingdom
  • Tags: age-verified, age-handover
  • Note: Age-restricted (18+): ship with a Royal Mail age-verified service; the recipient’s age is checked on delivery.
  • Fulfillment: ready to ship

What the app checks, where, and what it writes on the order

The full detail of each step: which products count as restricted, what the buyer sees, when checkout is blocked and the tags you can filter orders by.

Restricted products

  • Up to 25 collections, any product tags and product types, case-insensitive
  • One minimum age from 16 to 25, default 18
  • On Pro, a minimum age per delivery country, by two-letter country code
  • A cart check stays valid for 1 to 30 days, default 7

Cart step

  • App embed Age check (cart drawer) for the cart drawer and cart page
  • App block Age check to place it on the cart page yourself
  • Shows only when the cart holds a restricted product
  • Date of birth and a confirm checkbox, then Age confirmed
  • English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Dutch and Polish
  • The date of birth is used to work out the age and is not stored

Checkout rule

  • A Shopify Cart and Checkout Validation Function, listed under Settings › Checkout › Checkout rules
  • Blocks a missing, expired, not genuine or too-young check
  • The delivery country’s minimum age; with split deliveries, the highest one
  • Before an address is known, the general minimum age
  • Messages in English, German or French

Order tags

  • age-verified: a valid check
  • age-handover: the handover note was added
  • age-check-failed: held, no valid check
  • age-check-plan-limit: held, past the plan’s monthly limit of verified orders
  • age-id-check-pending, age-id-checked, age-id-rejected: ID review on Pro

Verification log

  • Order, date, result, delivery country, minimum age and what the app did
  • Filter by result and search by order number
  • Never a date of birth or an ID image, only the confirmed age, capped at 25
  • CSV export on Pro

The app helps you run an age check; which checks your products need is yours to decide. Not legal advice.

How to add age verification to Shopify

  1. Choose the restricted products

Pick collections, product tags or product types in Rules and set the minimum age.

  2. Switch on the app embed

In the theme editor, turn on Age check (cart drawer) under App embeds.

  3. Turn on age checks

Tick it in Settings. The checkout rule then shows as Active.

What it does not do

Knowing the limits up front saves you an install.

  • It does not prove a buyer’s age

The buyer types a date of birth, and the app cannot tell whether it is true. Many rules expect more, such as an ID check or an age check on delivery: the ID review queue and the handover note are there for that.

  • It does not see or keep ID documents

With ID review, you ask the buyer for ID yourself. The app records only who approved or rejected the order, and when.

  • It does not book the carrier service

The handover note is a reminder for your team. You book the age-checked delivery with the carrier.

  • It is not legal advice

It does not decide which rules apply to your products or make a shop meet any law on its own. Read the official guidance, such as GOV.UK on selling vaping and nicotine products, Business Companion on online sales of age-restricted products and § 10 of Germany’s Jugendschutzgesetz.

How much does it cost?

The cart step, the checkout rule, order holds and tags and the handover note are free for up to 50 verified orders a month. After the 50th, verified orders are held and tagged age-check-plan-limit so you can look at them. Pro is $5.99 a month or $59 a year, billed through Shopify, with a 7-day free trial on your first subscription. It adds unlimited verified orders, a minimum age per country, the ID check queue and CSV export.

Which Shopify permissions does it ask for?

Read products, to know which products are age-restricted; read and write orders, to check each new order and add its tags and note; write validations, for the checkout rule; and write merchant-managed and third-party fulfillment orders, to put an order on hold and release it.

Do I need to change my theme?

No theme code. Turn on the Age check (cart drawer) app embed in the theme editor: it adds the step to the cart drawer and the cart page. To choose where the step sits on the cart page, add the Age check app block there instead.

Do I need Shopify Plus?

No. The checkout block is a checkout rule (a Shopify Cart and Checkout Validation Function) that comes with the app and works on every Shopify plan. Shopify lists it under Settings > Checkout > Checkout rules as Aetas: Age Verification.

What happens to my data if I uninstall?

The app’s access ends at once. Shopify asks the app to delete your store’s data 48 hours later, and it does. Dates of birth were never stored, and the tags and notes already on your orders stay in Shopify.

Is a date of birth enough of an age check?

That depends on the product and the country, and many rules ask for more, such as an ID check or a check on delivery. With Pro, the app can hold verified orders until staff have seen an ID, and the handover note reminds your team to book the carrier’s age-checked delivery. It is not legal advice: read the GOV.UK guidance for the UK and § 10 JuSchG for Germany, and ask a lawyer if you are unsure.
