- About Etiketto: EU Nutrition Labels
You sell vitamin capsules, protein powder or a herbal blend to shoppers in Germany, Austria or Switzerland. The product page looks good, but the label is a blurry photo, the ingredients sit somewhere in the description and the allergens are not emphasised. And in the back of your mind there is the word Abmahnung: a warning letter over information missing from the page.
This guide is about the Nahrungsergänzungsmittel Angaben on a Shopify product page: what is different for food supplements, which parts you can enter once per product and show with one theme block, and which parts you write yourself. No Liquid and no hand-built metafields.
This article is only about displaying information. It is not legal advice and it does not make a page compliant. Check the obligations for your products and markets yourself, or ask a lawyer or an advisory body that specialises in food law. Switzerland has its own food law, so check it separately if you sell there.
What is different for food supplements
Food supplements follow the general food information rules of Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011, plus their own directive, Directive 2002/46/EC. In Germany it is implemented by the Nahrungsergänzungsmittelverordnung (NemV), in Austria by its own regulation.
Two points matter most for your product page:
- The usual nutrition table is not the format. Article 29 of Regulation 1169/2011 excludes food supplements from its nutrition declaration section. Instead, Article 8 of the directive asks for the amount of each nutrient or substance per portion as recommended for daily consumption, and for vitamins and minerals also as a percentage of the reference values.
- Extra particulars. Article 6 of the directive adds wording that ordinary foods do not carry.
| Particular | Source | Example |
|---|---|---|
| The name “food supplement” (Nahrungsergänzungsmittel) | Directive 2002/46/EC, Art. 6 | Nahrungsergänzungsmittel mit Vitamin D |
| Category names of the nutrients or substances | Art. 6 | Vitamin D, Magnesium |
| Recommended daily dose | Art. 6 | 1 capsule a day |
| Warning not to exceed the daily dose | Art. 6 | Do not exceed the stated recommended daily dose |
| Not a substitute for a varied diet | Art. 6 | Not a substitute for a varied and balanced diet |
| Keep out of reach of young children | Art. 6 | Keep out of the reach of young children |
| Amounts per daily dose | Art. 8 | Vitamin D per capsule, with its share of the reference value |
Article 7 of the directive also forbids claiming that a supplement prevents, treats or cures a disease. Our guide to nutrition and health claims covers what you may say about your product.
What stays the same as for other foods
The general rules still apply to a supplement sold online:
- Before purchase. Under Article 14 of Regulation 1169/2011, the mandatory information except the date has to be available before the purchase, on the product page or through clearly identified means.
- Allergens emphasised in the ingredient list. Article 21 applies, so allergens such as milk in a protein powder or soy in a capsule coating stand out from the rest of the list, for example in bold.
- The food business operator. Name or business name and address.
- Net quantity and storage conditions. For example “60 capsules, 36 g” and “Store in a cool, dry place”.
Our guide to EU allergen and food information for online food shops explains these points in detail.
Step 1: Gather the data for each product
Before you open any tool, collect for each product, ideally from your producer’s specification or the pack:
- The ingredient list, with the allergens it contains.
- The name and address of the food business operator.
- Net quantity and storage conditions.
- The supplement wording: the name “Nahrungsergänzungsmittel”, the daily dose, the warnings and the amounts per daily dose.
Compare the list with the rules that apply to your product, or with your adviser. That check stays with you.
Step 2: Fill in the product’s form in Etiketto
Open the product in the Etiketto: EU Nutrition Labels editor. On one screen you enter the ingredients, the allergens, net quantity, storage, origin and the operator.
In the ingredient list, wrap each allergen in asterisks:
Magnesiumcitrat, Kapselhülle: Hydroxypropylmethylcellulose, Füllstoff: *Sojalecithin*
On the product page the marked words show in bold. Only the words you mark are emphasised: the app does not guess allergens for you, so read the list against your specification. As a second check, the free EU allergen checker shows the 14 EU allergens in a German or English list.
The editor’s nutrition table is per 100 g. It does not cover amounts per daily dose or reference values. For a supplement, put the per-daily-dose amounts, the daily dose and the warnings into the product description as text, exactly as they appear on the pack. If one of your products is an ordinary food rather than a supplement, for example a protein bar, the per 100 g nutrition table fits it.
Step 3: Add the Food information block to the product page
This needs an Online Store 2.0 theme and no theme code changes.
- In your Shopify admin, go to Online Store > Themes > Customize.
- Open the Product template.
- Add the Food information block.
- Place it where shoppers look, for example below the buy button or next to the description with the supplement wording.
- Pick a layout (table, accordion, compact or card) and one of 8 style presets.
- Save.
The block renders plain HTML text, not an image, so shoppers can read it on a phone and search engines and screen readers read it like the rest of the page. Each product page shows its own ingredients, allergens and operator.
Step 4: Check the live page in German
The label wording of the block, such as its headings, comes in 10 languages, German included. Your own text, such as the ingredient list, can be translated into each published store language. Make sure German is published as a storefront language, add the German ingredient list with the allergens marked, then open the product page in German and check:
- Is the word Nahrungsergänzungsmittel in the product name or close to it?
- Are the allergens bold in the ingredient list?
- Are the operator name and address there?
- Are the daily dose, the warnings and the amounts per daily dose on the page, matching the pack?
- Is everything in German, including the headings?
Check one product of each kind first, then fill in the rest. When a recipe changes, update the form and the description before you sell the new version.
A short checklist
- Product name includes “Nahrungsergänzungsmittel” where it applies
- Ingredients entered, allergens marked with asterisks in every language version
- Operator name and address, net quantity and storage filled in
- Daily dose, warnings and amounts per daily dose in the description, matching the pack
- Food information block added to the Product template and saved
- German product page checked against the packaging
About Etiketto: EU Nutrition Labels
Etiketto: EU Nutrition Labels is a Shopify app for food shops selling into the EU. It shows the food information Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011 requires on your product pages: a nutrition table, ingredients with allergens in bold, and the operator. You fill in one form per product and add one block in the theme editor, with no Liquid edits.
The app only shows what you enter. It does not calculate values or detect allergens, and the completeness and accuracy of your supplement information stay with you.
Selling Nahrungsergänzungsmittel and want the ingredients, bold allergens and operator on every product page? Install Etiketto: EU Nutrition Labels from the Shopify App Store, fill in your first product and add the Food information block.
