Shopify Nährwerttabelle and Allergene on the Product Page, No Code
Show a German Nährwerttabelle and Zutaten with Allergene in bold on your Shopify product page, from one form per product and one theme block. No Liquid.
In this guide
You sell food to shoppers in Germany. Other shop owners talk about Abmahnungen over missing food information, and you want your product pages to show the Nährwerttabelle, the Zutaten with Allergene in bold and the operator, in German. Then you open your theme and find three manual routes:
- Build a tab or accordion with metafields and a Liquid snippet.
- Paste a photo of the label into the product description.
- Bold every allergen by hand in each ingredient paragraph.
This guide shows a simpler way to get a Shopify Nährwerttabelle and Allergene onto the product page: fill in one form per product, add one block to the product template, and check the German page. No Liquid and no hand-built metafields.
This guide is only about displaying information on your product page. It is not legal advice. If you are unsure what your products need to show, ask a lawyer or an advisory body that specialises in food law.
Why the manual routes cause trouble
- A label image in the description. Text inside a picture is not text on your page. Shoppers can’t select or copy it, search engines and screen readers can’t reliably read it, and every recipe change means a new image.
- Metafields plus Liquid. Each product needs the right data in the right field, and one wrong line in the snippet means the table shows the wrong values or nothing at all. It can also break when you change or update your theme.
- Bold allergens in HTML. When you edit an ingredient list, it is easy to lose one
<strong>tag and with it the emphasis on an allergen. - Headings typed into the theme. Words like “Nutrition” or “Ingredients” written straight into a snippet stay in English on a German storefront.
Etiketto: EU Nutrition Labels puts this into one editor per product and one theme block.
Step 1: Gather the data for each product
Before you open the app, collect for each product:
- The nutrition values per 100 g for the Nährwerttabelle: energy in kJ and kcal, fat, saturates, carbohydrate, sugars, fibre, protein and salt.
- The ingredient list (Zutaten), with the allergens it contains.
- The name and address of the food business operator.
- If you want them on the page: net quantity, storage and origin.
This data usually already sits in your spreadsheet or comes from your producer. Check it against its source before you enter it. The app shows the values you enter; it does not calculate them from a recipe.
Step 2: Fill in one form per product
Open the product in the Etiketto editor. On one screen you enter the nutrition per 100 g, the ingredients and the operator details, plus net quantity, storage and origin if you use them.
In the ingredient list, wrap each allergen in asterisks:
Haferflocken, Honig, *Butter* (*Milch*), Sonnenblumenkerne
On the product page, the marked words show in bold. You decide what is emphasised: the app does not detect allergens, so only the words you mark are bold. To check a German Zutaten list for the 14 EU allergens before you mark them, run it through the free EU allergen checker, which reads German as well as English. Because the food information belongs to each product, every product page shows its own values and allergens without extra theme logic.
Step 3: Show it in German
Your shoppers read German, so the label should be in German too. Two parts make that work:
- The label wording. The fixed text of the block, such as the headings and the row names of the nutrition table, comes in 10 languages, German included. You don’t write or translate it yourself.
- Your own text. The text you enter per product, such as the ingredient list, can be translated into each published store language.
To set it up:
- Make sure German is added and published as a storefront language in Shopify. The app reads your store’s published languages.
- Open the product in the app’s editor and add the German version of your text, for example the Zutaten list.
- Mark the allergens with asterisks in the German text as well, for example
*Weizenmehl*or*Haselnüsse*. - Save, then open the product page in German.
Read the German text once more on the live page. If you are unsure about a term, ask a native speaker or your producer to check it.
Step 4: Add the Food information block to the product page
Now place the information on the page. This needs an Online Store 2.0 theme and no theme code changes.
- In your Shopify admin, go to Online Store > Themes > Customize.
- Open the Product template.
- Add the Food information block.
- Drag it where you want it, for example below the buy button or the description.
- Pick a layout (table, accordion, compact or card) and one of 8 style presets.
- Save.
The Nährwerttabelle and the ingredient list render as plain HTML text, not an image, so search engines, screen readers and translation tools read them like the rest of the page. Check the result on a phone and on a desktop.
Step 5: Check the live page
Switch the storefront to German, open a product and check:
- Do the values in the Nährwerttabelle match your packaging?
- Are the Allergene bold in the Zutaten list?
- Is the operator name and address there?
- Is everything in German, including the headings?
Do this for one product of each kind you sell before you fill in the rest. When a recipe changes, update the product’s form before you sell the new version.
A short checklist
- German published as a storefront language
- Nutrition per 100 g filled in for each product
- Allergens marked with asterisks in every language version of the ingredients
- Operator name and address filled in
- Food information block added to the Product template, layout picked and saved
- German product page checked against the packaging
About Etiketto: EU Nutrition Labels
Etiketto: EU Nutrition Labels is a Shopify app for food shops selling into the EU. It shows the food information Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011 requires on your product pages: a nutrition table, ingredients with allergens in bold, and the operator. You enter it once per product in one editor and add the Food information block in the theme editor, with no Liquid edits. The label wording comes in 10 languages, and your own text can be translated into each published store language.
The app only shows what you enter. What you enter decides what the buyer sees, so the completeness and accuracy of the data stay with you.
Want a German Nährwerttabelle with bold Allergene on your product pages? Install Etiketto: EU Nutrition Labels from the Shopify App Store, fill in your first product, and add the Food information block to your product page.
