Black Friday is on 27 November this year and Christmas orders start right behind it. If you want to offer gift wrapping on your Shopify store this season, now is the time to set it up: before the first big order day, not in the middle of it. Wrapping is one of the few add-ons buyers expect at this time of year, and when it is set up well, it is also one of the easiest to charge for.

This guide walks through a setup that works on current Shopify themes, from the wrap itself to the packing table.

Step 1: Decide what you offer

Write the offer down before you touch the admin:

  • Which wraps? One kraft paper option is enough to start. Two or three, such as paper, a ribbon box and a festive design, give buyers a choice without slowing your packing.
  • Per order or per item? Wrapping the whole parcel is quicker to pack. Wrapping each item suits shops where one order often holds gifts for different people.
  • What price? Cover the material and the packing time. If wrapping is part of your brand, you can also include it at no charge, as long as the order still tells your packers to wrap.
  • Which products? Exclude what cannot be wrapped, such as oversized or chilled items.

Step 2: Make the wrap a product

To charge for wrapping in a normal Shopify cart, the wrap has to be a line in the cart, and lines in the cart are products. So the common setup is one product called “Gift wrap”, with one variant per wrap and its own price and photo.

A few settings decide whether that product behaves:

  • Keep it out of your catalogue. Shopify’s Unlisted product status hides a product from store search, collection pages, product recommendations, your sitemap and internet search, while it can still be added to the cart. That is what a wrap needs.
  • Inventory. Either turn off inventory tracking, or track it as a real count of wrapping material so it stops selling when you run out.
  • Tax. Decide with your accountant whether wrapping is taxed like the goods it wraps, and set the product accordingly.
  • Price changes. Edit the price of the variant, not a discount, so the order total shows exactly what the buyer paid for wrapping.

Step 3: Let buyers choose it where they decide

A wrap nobody sees is a wrap nobody buys. There are three places to offer it:

Where Strength Watch out for
Product page Buyers decide while they think about the gift Needs to work with Buy it now
Cart page One choice for the whole order Some themes use a drawer instead
Cart drawer Where many buyers actually check out Needs to fit a narrow space

Shopify’s dynamic checkout buttons let buyers skip the cart: “When a customer clicks an unbranded button, they skip the cart and go to the Shopify Checkout.” If your product pages show Buy it now, an option offered only in the cart will be missed by those buyers. Offer it on the product page too, or accept that some gifts arrive unwrapped.

Step 4: Ask for the gift message at the same time

A wrapped gift without a card feels unfinished. Put a message box next to the wrap choice, with a length limit that fits your card, and save it on the order where your packers will find it. Our guide on adding a gift message box to Shopify compares where the message can be stored and how to get it onto a printed card.

Step 5: Keep prices out of the parcel

A gift is shipped to someone who should not see what it cost. Make sure the packing slip in a gift parcel has no prices, and that no invoice goes in the box. See packing slips without prices for gift orders for the options.

Step 6: Plan the packing table

Every wrapped order takes longer to pack than a plain one, and December is when you have the least time. Before the rush:

  • Mark gift orders so they are easy to find: the wrap line in the order, and the gift details under Additional details.
  • Print cards in a batch each morning, matched to order numbers.
  • Stock up on paper, ribbon and boxes; a wrap that sells out on 15 December is a support ticket.
  • Check your cut-off dates. If wrapping adds a day to your handling time, your last order date for Christmas moves too. Our post on holiday shipping cutoff dates for Christmas 2026 covers how to work them out and announce them.

Step 7: Test before Black Friday

Place real test orders and check every path:

  1. A product with wrap chosen on the product page.
  2. The same from the cart page and from the cart drawer.
  3. Buy it now with a wrap.
  4. A message that is too long, and one with characters your card font may not print, such as emoji.
  5. The order in the admin: is the wrap a separate line with its price, and is the message readable?
  6. The printed packing slip and card: no prices, the right message, the right order.

Where Knotly: Gift Wrap & Messages fits

Knotly: Gift Wrap & Messages sets up this flow for you. It adds a Gift options block to your product page, cart page or cart drawer, where buyers mark a gift, pick a wrap, choose an occasion and write a message.

  • Wraps with their own price: up to 10 options, each with a price and a photo. Each wrap is a variant of one unlisted Gift wrap product the app creates, so its price is part of the order total.
  • Message rules: a length limit, blocked words and a message required with gift wrap, with an optional checkout rule that stops orders breaking them.
  • Cards for the occasion: Christmas, birthday, wedding and more, with your heading and colours, printed as A6, postcard, or 4 per A4 or Letter sheet.
  • Packing slips without prices, for one order or many as one PDF or a ZIP, and buyers can ask you to hide prices on the packing slip.

The block needs an Online Store 2.0 theme, with no theme code changes. Gift details stay on the order as cart attributes, and cards are made in your browser. See Knotly: Gift Wrap & Messages for the details.

FAQ

Does Shopify have a built-in gift wrap option? To charge for wrapping in the cart, the wrap has to be a product. Most shops create one Gift wrap product with a variant per wrap and offer it on the product page or in the cart, by theme code or an app.

How do I hide the gift wrap product from my store? Give it the Unlisted status. Unlisted products are left out of search, collections, recommendations and the sitemap, but can still be added to the cart.

Should gift wrap be per item or per order? Per order is faster to pack. Per item suits orders with gifts for different people. Pick one and say clearly which it is next to the price.

When should I set up gift wrapping for Christmas? Before Black Friday, so the first big order day already runs through it and you can fix problems while volumes are still normal.
