How to export orders from Shopify
The file this converter reads comes from the Orders page in Shopify admin.
- In Shopify admin, go to Orders. Filter or search the list first if you want only some orders.
- Click Export.
- Choose which orders to export, for example the current page or a date range, and the file format under Export as.
- Click Export orders. Export transaction histories makes a different file, with payments only.
- Up to 50 orders, or the current page, download straight away. Larger exports and exports by date are emailed to you and the store owner.
The file is a UTF-8 CSV. Open it here instead of double-clicking it, and you get the clean version in one step.
Why the Shopify order export has empty cells
One order with three items becomes three rows, and only the first one is complete.
Shopify writes one row per line item. The order's own fields, such as Financial Status, Paid at, Subtotal, Total and the billing and shipping address, are filled in only on the order's first row; its other rows carry the line item and little else. Sort or filter that sheet by country or status, and the extra rows lose their order.
The converter copies each order's fields down onto all of its rows. Line-item columns (Lineitem quantity, Lineitem name, Lineitem price, Lineitem sku, Vendor and the rest) stay as they are on each row.
| Name | Lineitem name | Financial Status | Shipping Country | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| #1003 | Wool throw - Moss | paid | DE | 224.89 |
| #1003 | Linen napkins (set of 4) | paid | DE | 224.89 |
| #1003 | Ceramic pour-over set | paid | DE | 224.89 |
What Shopify's order export can't do
The built-in export is a fixed list of columns, started by hand. This converter fixes the layout of that file; some gaps need data the file does not have.
| Job | Shopify's orders export | This converter | Columna: Order Export & Sheets |
|---|---|---|---|

Shopify to Excel: what goes wrong when you open the CSV directly
Double-clicking the export opens it in Excel, but Excel guesses each column's type.
Zip codes lose their leading zero
Excel reads 02108 as the number 2108. In the converter's XLSX file, zip codes and phone numbers are text, so they stay as written.
Timestamps stay text
Shopify writes times like
2026-10-26 09:14:22 -0400. The time zone offset at the end stops Excel from reading a date, so you can't sort or group by day. The converter writes them as real dates in your store's time, without the offset.Long numbers turn into 7.34E+12
The Id column is a long number that Excel shortens to scientific notation. The converter keeps it as text.
Names with accents look garbled
The export is UTF-8. Excel may open a CSV in an older encoding, so Zoë becomes Zoë. The XLSX file has no encoding to guess, and the converter's CSV starts with a UTF-8 marker that Excel reads.
Questions about the converter
Something else? Write to hello@reply.getstorefleet.com.
Is my order file uploaded anywhere?
No. The converter reads the file and builds the new one with JavaScript inside this browser tab. The orders, names and addresses in it are not sent to a server, and nothing is kept after you close the tab.
Why are so many cells empty in my Shopify order export?
Shopify's orders CSV has one row per line item. The order's own fields, such as financial status, totals and addresses, are filled in only on the first row of each order and left blank on its other rows. The converter copies them down onto every row of the same order, or folds the order into one row.
How do I export Shopify orders with tracking numbers?
The orders export from Shopify admin has no tracking number column, so neither the file nor this converter can show one. An order export app that reads fulfillments can: Columna: Order Export & Sheets offers Tracking number, Tracking company and Tracking URL columns.
Can Shopify export orders automatically?
Not from the Orders page: each export starts when you click Export, and larger exports arrive by email. To get a file on a schedule you need an app. Columna: Order Export & Sheets sends scheduled email exports, daily or weekly, on its Pro plan, and can sync orders to Google Sheets.
How do I get one row per order instead of one row per item?
Load the file and choose One row per order. Each order becomes a single row: the order fields stay as they are, the quantities are added up, and the line items are listed in one cell, for example 2 × Linen apron | 1 × Gift card.
Does the Excel file open in Google Sheets and Numbers?
Yes. The XLSX file opens in Excel, Google Sheets (File > Import, or open it from Google Drive), Apple Numbers and LibreOffice. Money and quantity columns are numbers and timestamps are dates, so you can sum, sort and filter them.
Which file does the converter need?
The orders CSV from Orders > Export > Export orders in Shopify admin. The transaction histories export and the products export have different columns and are not supported.
Is the converter free?
Yes. It is free to use, with no sign-up and no limit on the number of files. Large files are limited only by the memory of your device.
