Running the Same Discount Code Across Several Shopify Stores
How to run one promotion across several Shopify stores for BFCM 2026: discount types and limits, creating codes per store, consistency checks, expiry and stacking.
In this guide
Black Friday 2026 falls on November 27, and Cyber Monday on November 30. If you run several Shopify stores, the promotion you plan once has to exist correctly in every one of them: same code, same value, same dates, same rules on what it combines with.
Shopify discounts belong to one store. There is no Shopify setting that creates a discount in one store and copies it to your others. So a cross-store promotion is really several promotions that you keep identical by hand, and the mistakes come from small differences between them.
This guide covers the Shopify rules that matter, a way to create the discount store by store, the checks that catch differences, and the stacking mistakes worth avoiding.
The Shopify rules to know first
Types and classes
Shopify’s discount types are amount off (products or order), buy X get Y, and free shipping (Shopify Help Center). Each discount also falls into a class that decides how it combines: product, order or shipping (Shopify Help Center).
Each discount is either a discount code the customer enters at checkout or an automatic discount that applies without a code (Shopify Help Center).
Limits that bite during peak season
| Rule | What it means for you | Source |
|---|---|---|
| At most 25 active automatic discounts per store, app discounts included | A store with many automatic offers may have no room for the BFCM one | Discount combinations |
| Up to 5 product or order codes and 1 shipping code per order | Customers can stack codes if your settings allow it | Discount combinations |
| Two shipping discounts never apply to the same order | A free shipping code and a free shipping automatic discount don’t stack | Discount combinations |
| Discounts combine only when each discount’s settings allow it | One discount set to “combine” is not enough; both must allow it | Discount combinations |
| Type and method can’t be changed on an existing discount | A code made as “amount off products” can’t become “amount off order”; delete and recreate | Discount combinations |
| Combinations work on the Online Store, Storefront API and Shopify POS | External checkouts such as Facebook, Instagram and Google aren’t supported | Discount combinations |
| Start and end times follow the store’s time zone | Stores in different time zones start at different moments | Amount off discounts |
The time zone rule is the one multi-store teams forget. If your EU store is set to Paris time and your US store to New York time, “starts November 27 at 00:00” means two different moments. Decide whether you want the same local time or the same global moment, and set each store accordingly.
Settings on each code
For an amount off discount you can set (Shopify Help Center):
- A minimum purchase amount or minimum quantity.
- Eligibility: all customers, specific customers, customer segments, or customers in specific markets.
- A total usage limit, and a limit of one use per customer.
- Which classes it combines with.
- A start date and an optional end date. Without an end date, the discount doesn’t expire.
Step 1: Write the promotion spec once
Before anyone opens an admin, write one spec that every store’s discount must match. This is the document you check against later.
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Code | BLACKFRIDAY26 |
| Type and class | Amount off order |
| Value | 20% |
| Minimum purchase | Store currency equivalent of your threshold |
| Eligibility | All customers |
| Usage limits | One use per customer |
| Combines with | Shipping discounts only |
| Starts | Nov 27, 2026, 00:00 store local time |
| Ends | Nov 30, 2026, 23:59 store local time |
| Stores | List each store by name |
Write down anything that legitimately differs by store, such as currency thresholds, and why. Everything else must be identical.
Step 2: Check room in each store
For every store, before creating anything:
- Count active automatic discounts. If you plan an automatic BFCM discount and the store is near 25, deactivate old ones first.
- Look for an existing code with the same name. A leftover code from last year with different settings is a classic source of confusion.
- Review active discounts’ combination settings. A product discount that combines with order discounts will stack with your new order code.
The Discounts list can be filtered by status, method, type, “Combines with”, start date, times used and tag (Shopify Help Center), which makes these checks quick.
Step 3: Create the discount in each store
Create it store by store from the spec. One person creates, a second person checks, before the start date.
- Open the store’s admin and confirm the store name in the header before you start.
- Create the discount with the type and method from the spec. Remember you can’t change type or method later.
- Enter the code exactly. Copy it from the spec rather than typing.
- Set value, minimums, eligibility, usage limits and combinations.
- Set start and end dates in that store’s time zone.
- Save, and note in your tracker that this store is done and by whom.
Create the discount early with a future start date. A discount that is scheduled but not active yet can be checked calmly; one created at 23:50 on November 26 can’t.
On the Basic plan or higher, Shopify’s Rollouts can also switch existing discounts on or off on a schedule; a rollout can include up to 250 discounts, and a discount keeps its own active dates (Shopify Help Center). Rollouts are still per store.
Step 4: Check every store against the spec
A side-by-side check catches the differences that matter. For each store, fill in a row:
| Store | Code exact | Value | Minimum | Eligibility | Limits | Combines with | Start | End | Checked by |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Store A | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ | Name |
| Store B |
Then do a test order or a checkout test in each store once the discount is active, or on a test discount with the same settings before:
- The code applies to a qualifying cart.
- It does not apply below the minimum.
- It combines with exactly what the spec says, and nothing else.
For a wider set of pre-peak checks, see the BFCM 2026 checklist for multiple Shopify stores.
Stacking mistakes to avoid
Most expensive discount mistakes are combinations nobody meant.
- Old product discounts that combine with order discounts. A standing 15% product discount plus a 20% order code can produce a deeper discount than intended. Check each active discount’s combination settings, not only the new one.
- An automatic discount and a code that both combine. If both allow it, a customer gets both.
- Multiple codes per order. Customers can enter up to 5 product or order codes. If several of your codes combine with each other, someone will find the stack.
- Free shipping twice. Two shipping discounts never apply together, so a free shipping code may do nothing when a free shipping automatic discount is already active. That is a support ticket, not a loss, but it is avoidable.
- Manually applied custom discounts. Shopify applies custom discounts added manually, and discounts added through the Scripts API, regardless of combination settings (Shopify Help Center).
Expiry and clean-up
When the promotion ends:
- Confirm the end date passed in every store, or deactivate the code by hand. You can deactivate several unexpired discounts at once from the Discounts page (Shopify Help Center).
- A deactivated code shows customers “Unable to find a valid discount matching the code entered.”
- Don’t reactivate expired discounts in bulk without checking: reactivated discounts become active with no end date.
- Export each store’s discounts for your records, then delete the ones you won’t reuse. Deletion is permanent.
If prices also change for the sale, keep that separate from discounts and follow how to change Shopify prices in bulk safely. For the refund side of a busy season, see Shopify holiday rules for refunds, captures and discount codes and a chargeback and dispute process. Agencies running promotions for clients can settle who approves discounts during client onboarding.
When you run several stores
Storefleet Store Ops does not create a discount once and copy it to every store; there is no automatic sync between stores. In its web dashboard, each store’s discount change is previewed with values before and after and sits in one Approvals list with every other store’s pending changes, where it is approved for that store. After writing, StoreFleet reads each store back from Shopify to check the change landed, and rolls it back where Shopify allows. See changes across multiple Shopify stores for the wider routine.
FAQ
Can I create one discount code that works in all my Shopify stores?
No. Each Shopify store has its own discounts. You create the same code in each store, with the same settings, and check that they match.
Why did my BFCM discount start at a different time in each store?
Discount start and end times follow each store’s own time zone. Two stores in different time zones start a “midnight” discount at different moments.
How many discount codes can a customer use on one order?
Up to 5 product or order discount codes and 1 shipping discount code, as long as each discount’s combination settings allow it.
Can I change a discount from amount off products to amount off order?
No. Shopify doesn’t let you change the type or method of an existing discount. Delete it and create a new one.
What do customers see when a code is deactivated?
They see “Unable to find a valid discount matching the code entered.” Check that the end date is set in every store so the promotion closes on time.
