- Keeping your numbers in one place
You registered in LUCID, Germany’s packaging register, copied your number into Amazon, Etsy, eBay or Kaufland, and the marketplace says it is invalid, or your listings to Germany stay blocked. This happens often, and the cause is usually one of a few things you can check yourself.
Marketplaces now have to check you. Under Article 45(4) of the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation, which has applied since 12 August 2026, online platforms must obtain your registration number in the country where the consumer is located, plus a self-certification, before they let you sell. The ZSVR, which runs LUCID, puts it plainly: without this, “the packaged products may not be offered on the online platform.”
This article is general information, not legal advice. Marketplaces do not publish every detail of how they check numbers, so treat the causes below as things to check, not as a statement of any one marketplace’s rules.
Where each marketplace asks for the number
| Marketplace | Where the number goes | What its help page says |
|---|---|---|
| Amazon | The “Compliance Information for Extended Producer Responsibility” portal in Seller Central | Proof for German packaging is “a 13-digit registration number, your LUCID number”; missing or invalid EPR data “may result in listings being restricted or removed” (Amazon) |
| Etsy | Shop Manager → Finances → Legal and tax information → Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) Registrations → Add info under Germany | Producers must register and provide each registration number in Shop Manager (Etsy) |
| eBay | Account → business details → extended producer responsibility → add or manage, choose Germany and packaging | Only on a computer or tablet, not a phone; listings of non-compliant sellers may be hidden (eBay) |
| Kaufland | During seller registration in the Seller Portal | A valid LUCID number is a requirement for registering and selling on Kaufland.de (Kaufland Seller University) |
Cause 1: The number is in the wrong format
The ZSVR’s LUCID FAQ says your LUCID registration number is “DE followed by 13 digits”. Amazon’s help page calls it “a 13-digit registration number”. So two marketplaces can describe the same number in slightly different ways.
What to check:
- Copy the number from your LUCID dashboard or the confirmation e-mail. Do not retype it.
- Remove spaces, dashes and line breaks that come with copying.
- Check for a letter O typed instead of a zero.
- Read the field’s own hint. If it rejects the number with the DE prefix, check that marketplace’s instructions for whether it wants the prefix, rather than trying formats at random.
Cause 2: The registration is too new or not finished
Two timing issues come up:
- The public register updates once a day. The ZSVR says: “If your registration was completed less than 24 hours ago, it may not yet be displayed in the register.” A marketplace that checks against the register may not see you yet.
- The registration was never completed. The LUCID FAQ says you have seven days to complete registration after you activate your account, and unfinished details “will be automatically deleted after 7 days”. You only receive the registration number once the process is finished.
Fix: search for yourself in the public register. If you are not listed a day after registering, log in to LUCID and check that the registration went through.
Cause 3: It is the wrong kind of number
Sellers often hold several numbers that look official. Only one is your LUCID number.
| Number | What it is | Accepted as a LUCID number? |
|---|---|---|
| LUCID registration number (DE + 13 digits) | Your packaging registration in Germany | Yes |
| Dual system contract or customer number | Your contract with a take-back scheme | No |
| WEEE registration number (Stiftung EAR) | Electrical and electronic equipment | No. The ZSVR says the LUCID number does not work for other registers such as the EAR register |
| French UIN (IDU) | Your EPR number in France, for example via Citeo | No. It goes in the France field |
| VAT or tax number | Your tax identity | No |
Amazon, Etsy and eBay each have separate fields per country and per category, such as packaging, electrical equipment and batteries. Check that you put the LUCID number under Germany and packaging.
Cause 4: The number belongs to someone else
A marketplace needs your registration, not your supplier’s.
- Print-on-demand and dropshipping. If your provider ships to German consumers under your store, you are usually the one placing that packaging on the market. A provider’s number does not cover you by default. Our print-on-demand guide to LUCID and Citeo explains why.
- A former company or a second account. If you changed legal entity, the old registration belongs to the old entity.
Cause 5: Your account details do not match your LUCID entry
The public register lists your registration number, registration date, company details, tax reference number and brand names. The ZSVR’s register excerpt for platforms contains the registration number, company name, VAT or tax number, packaging details, country and the name of the authorised representative.
Marketplaces do not publish exactly which fields they compare. But if your marketplace account shows a different legal name, a trading name only, or a different tax number from your LUCID registration, matching is likely to be harder. Check:
- Legal name. Same spelling and legal form in both places.
- Tax number. The LUCID FAQ says to enter your VAT number if you have both a VAT and a taxpayer number. If you registered with “No tax number yet”, the FAQ says you must add the real number to your master data once you have it.
- Brand names. The ZSVR says you must enter the brand names under which you make packaging available in Germany, and use your company name for unbranded packaging. If you sell under a brand that is not in your registration, add it.
You change these details yourself in LUCID. The ZSVR says it “cannot amend your registration data on your behalf”, and changes generally appear in the public register the next day.
Cause 6: Something is missing since 12 August 2026
On 12 August 2026 the PPWR and the German VerpackDG replaced the old Verpackungsgesetz. Existing registrations stay valid, but some need updating:
- Authorised representative. Companies based abroad without a German branch that sell directly to end users in Germany must appoint one. The ZSVR says already registered producers are prompted after logging in, the contract must be in German, you may appoint only one, and the appointment only takes effect once the representative confirms it in LUCID.
- Deadlines in the transition. Under § 68 VerpackDG, changes the new law requires in an existing registration must be made by 12 November 2026, and dual system contracts concluded before 12 August 2026 run until 31 December 2026 at the latest. An entry left unchanged, or a contract that lapses, can be why a number stops being accepted.
- Self-certification. Article 45(4)(b) PPWR requires a self-certification that you meet EPR requirements in the consumer’s country. If a marketplace asks for one, a number alone will not unlock your listings.
Cause 7: No dual system contract behind the number
Registration is free and fast. System participation is a separate contract. The ZSVR says packaging intended for shipment is “always subject to system participation, without exception”, and its register excerpt “will not tell you if your business partners have concluded a system participation agreement”. Etsy’s German packaging guidance also mentions the dual system.
A marketplace may ask for proof beyond the number. The ZSVR says system operators must give their clients a confirmation of participation, which can serve as that proof. Check also that the registration number in your dual system contract is the same as the one in LUCID; the ZSVR’s data reporting page says they must match.
A step-by-step fix
- Find yourself in the public register. Search by company or brand name. Note the exact number and details shown.
- Log in to LUCID. Look for open items, such as a missing authorised representative or an unfinished change.
- Compare your marketplace account with the register entry: legal name, tax number, country, brand.
- Re-enter the number by copy and paste, in the Germany packaging field, following the field’s format hint.
- Add the self-certification or dual system confirmation if the marketplace asks.
- Wait one day after any LUCID change before checking again, because the register updates once a day.
- Contact seller support with a screenshot of your public register entry if the number still fails.
Pitfalls to avoid
- Registering in a hurry under a trading name that differs from your marketplace account.
- Adding a new brand to your store but not to LUCID.
- Using a provider’s number for print-on-demand items.
- Fixing the number but leaving the dual system contract unsigned. The marketplace check is not the only one: you still need to report your packaging weights. Our guide on calculating packaging weight per material from Shopify orders shows how.
FAQ
What does a LUCID registration number look like?
According to the ZSVR, it is “DE followed by 13 digits”. You get it right after completing registration, and it appears on your LUCID dashboard and in the public register.
How long after registering will a marketplace accept my number?
The ZSVR says the public register is updated once a day, so a new registration may not show for up to 24 hours. Marketplaces do not publish how often they re-check, so allow time before your German sales need to start.
Can my authorised representative register in LUCID for me?
No. The ZSVR says registration in LUCID remains your personal duty. Your authorised representative takes on the other packaging duties, such as the system contract and volume reports, once appointed.
Does my LUCID number cover France or other EU countries?
No. Registration is per country. For France you need a UIN from a producer responsibility organisation such as Citeo. Our guide to the PPWR for Shopify sellers explains the country-by-country setup.
Do I need to show my LUCID number on my Shopify store?
The marketplace fields are separate from your store. Etsy’s France EPR page suggests also showing the number where buyers can see it, such as shop policies. For France, ADEME says producers must state their UIN in their terms of sale and on their website.
Keeping your numbers in one place
StoreFleet: Packaging EPR, a free Shopify app in review for the Shopify App Store, keeps your EPR registration numbers per country in one list, can show them on your storefront, and works out the kilograms per material you report behind them. It does not register you or check your number with LUCID; those steps stay with you and the ZSVR.
