Connect AI Tools Like Claude to Your Shopify Store with MCP

MCP lets AI assistants such as Claude read and act on your Shopify store through a controlled connection. What it is, what to use it for, and how to stay safe.

AI assistants are good at the kind of work that fills a store manager’s day: summarising, searching, comparing and drafting. Until recently, using them on store data meant exporting a spreadsheet and pasting it into a chat. The Model Context Protocol (MCP) changes that: it gives an AI tool a controlled connection to your store, so it can look things up and take actions through tools you allow.

What MCP is

MCP is an open standard for connecting AI applications to outside systems. An MCP server offers a set of tools (for example “find orders”, “get product”, “add tag”) and the AI client, such as Claude, can call them while it works on your request.

Three points matter for a merchant:

  • The AI only gets the tools the server offers. It cannot reach anything else in your store.
  • Access is tied to an account. The connection acts with the permissions of whoever set it up.
  • The AI asks, the server acts. Every change goes through the server’s own rules.

What you can use it for

Questions about your store

  • “Which orders from last week are still unfulfilled, and why?”
  • “List products with fewer than 5 units in stock.”
  • “Which customers ordered more than three times this year?”

The answer comes back in plain language, with the data behind it, without building a report.

Repetitive edits

  • Tagging a set of orders that match a description.
  • Drafting product descriptions in your store’s tone for review.
  • Preparing a list of products to discount, for a person to approve.

Investigating problems

  • “Why did this order not ship?” The assistant can pull the order, its fulfillment and its tracking in one go.
  • Comparing the same product across several stores to spot differences.

Staying safe

Connecting AI to a live store needs the same care as giving a new staff member access:

  1. Start read-only. Use it for questions first. Allow changes only once you trust the setup.
  2. Use the lowest role that works. The connection should not have owner rights if it only needs to read orders.
  3. Keep high-risk changes behind approval. Refunds, stock changes and discounts should still need a person to say yes.
  4. Check the audit log. Actions taken through the connection should be recorded like anyone else’s.
  5. Review what you ask for. An assistant can misunderstand a request. Read the summary of a change before confirming it.

MCP in Storefleet

Storefleet Pro adds MCP, so you can connect AI tools such as Claude to your store. It sits on the same controls as the rest of the workspace: admin, manager and staff roles, two-factor sign-in and an audit log, and in the web dashboard, refunds, cancellations and payment captures always need an owner. See approval workflows for live Shopify stores for how those controls work.

Pro starts at $10 a month for up to 2 stores, with a 7-day free trial, and every other feature is available on the Free and Standard packages. See pricing for all package sizes.
